Did DSS uncover bags of hard currency from Emefiele's Home?
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor who has been suspended, Godwin Emefiele, is said to have hidden money in a video that has gone viral.
On Wednesday, the 27-second video was shared by Twitter users.
This video has been confirmed to be fake.
Days after the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed Emefiele's arrest following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, the video went viral online. The authenticity of the shared video has been established.
The PUNCH has learned that Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank Governor who has been suspended, has had his passport taken by the Department of State Services.
The service arrested Emefiele in Lagos and flew him to Abuja on a private jet on Saturday following his suspension on Friday due to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned financial sector reforms.
In a statement, the service's spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, stated that Emefiele had been taken into custody and was the subject of an investigation.
However, on Sunday, a DSS source stated that seizing his travel document pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation was standard procedure.
The source added that the suspended apex bank governor's home and office would be searched.
"Of course, Emefiele's travel document would be confiscated as part of the standard procedure pending the conclusion of our investigation," the source stated. Additionally, as part of the investigation, his office and house would be scoured for documents that might be useful to the ongoing investigation into his CBN management.
A source confirms that bags of hard currency were also discovered in his Lagos home following the DSS raid.
